Evaporative air cooler systems

If your business is based in a drier and less humid part of Australia, you may want to check out evaporative cooling systems as these use up to 75% less energy than normal refrigerative air conditioners.[1]

Evaporative coolers are water-based and don’t use refrigeration.

They pull in hot air, then water in the unit evaporates and chilling the air, whihc is then blown our throughout the building:

  • A portable evaporative cooler only costs about 3.6 cents an hour to run.
  • A ducted evaporative cooler costs 16–23 cents per hour.[2]

With this type of cooling unit, you need to keep the windows and doors open in the rooms that are being cooled. Not having them open reduces the performance and efficiency of the unit.

The Good Loaf, VIC

At the Good Loaf Bakery, an energy efficient evaporative cooler has been chosen over a split-system air conditioner. Sun-screening blinds fitted to the north-eastern side of the building, keep the heat out on hot days and reduce the demands on the air conditioner.[3]

  • 2. This assumes a rate of 25 cents per kWh. The cost is also dependent on the size of your premises – these figures are based on the size of a normal home which is equivalent in size to many small business premises.
