Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards (WELS) scheme

Heating water can use a lot of energy. So it makes financial sense to use products that minimise water use. Doing this lowers the cost of heating your water.

The ‘Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards’ (WELS) scheme rates indoor products that help to reduce water use. More than 12,700 products now carry the WELS label.

The WELS scheme is a joint initiative of the Australian, state and territory governments. The scheme currently covers dishwashers, washing machines, lavatory equipment, urinals, taps, showers and flow controllers.

Many of these products use hot water and at the point of sale they must display a star rating of their water efficiency and information about the volume of water that they use.
